There is a town called Taranto which is the main town of Apulia, many spiders are found here, one of them being the tarantula and this is where the tarantula takes its name from
Tarantulas inject their prey with venom found in their glands most injects are killed very fast, but the tarantula does not spin a web like a normal spider and wait, rather they go on the hunt at night, then quickly catch their prey using their legs.
In days gone by in Apulia, there was a disease called “tarantism” which spread rapidly through this town.
If you had caught this disease back in the day you would become hysterical in nature and without any warning one minute you could be in bed and the next minute you could be out dancing in a wild crazy motion!
Though strange it might sound or seem, one of the reasons for getting up and dancing seemed to do with the perspiration getting the illness out of the body. If you go to Italy today you can still see this dance today, and this dance goes back to when they had this pandemic running through Apulia
IT is thought that the name tarantula comes from this town Taranto, they called the disease tarantism because they thought these large spiders were the cause of them through their bites. It might be strange to think that people actually thought that if they were bit by this spider that they would be cured if they danced!
Back then people relied on someone like doctor kircher who helped patients who had gotten bit or thought they got bit from the spider he also provided sketches of these arachnids. To the horror of most people had you been bitten by this spider chances are that this doctor would have told you that you would be better off dancing the venom out of your system.
Ok enough with the dancing and to keep this short and sweet this is the main reason why the word tarantula is used today, as it goes back to this date and don’t forget when tarantulas are mating, they also look like they are dancing.
